Holding the sixth place in Europe for wine production, Romania could also be called "a vine homeland" in Europe alongside France, Italy, Spain or Germany, being one of the world's largest wine producers.Combine this with our royal history and you will get an exquisite experience.
Although the monarchy was abolished by communists in 1947, the royal family still enjoys much of the associated pageantry. It hosts events in the fairy-tale Peles Castle, once its home, now a museum. Beside the castle this tour follows other few living proofs of the bohemian times from the 19th century.
Program: the route follows the Prahova valley upstream, in the mountains. Peles Castle represents the first stop, in Sinaia resort. The, we continue the drive up, towards another mountain resort – Azuga. Here, a german investor, Rhein, a good friend of King Carol I, opened in 1892 a cellar that still exists even today. We pay a visit, taste a few samples of sparkling wine and have also the lunch. Return to the hills of Wallachia in the afternoon; from the richness of cellars that occupy the “Tuscany of Romania” we pick one which is directly related to the royal family – Crama Apogeum. - Peles Castle – Former summer home of the Romanian royal family since 1883, flanked and backed by majestic fir trees, Peles Castle, sits atop a rise in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in Sinaia resort.Inspired by Schloss Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, the castle is a romantic blend of Neo-Renaissance and Gothic Revival styles, erected started to 1875 and finished in 1914. It houses one of the finest collections of art in Eastern and Central Europe, consisting of statues, paintings, furniture, arms and armor, gold, silver, stained glass, ivory, fine china, tapestries, and rugs, spanning over 4 centuries of history. We will also visit Sinaia Monastery - one of the oldest monasteries in Romania, located only few minutes away.
- Rhein & Cie Azuga 1892 Cellars – there were built in 1892 by Wilhelm Rhein, at the request of King Charles I. The cellars are the oldest place in Romania where sparkling wine is produced according to the traditional method without interruption. The Iconic Estate’s Rhein & Cie Azuga 1892 Cellars have been the official supplier of the Royal House of Romania since 1904; the sparkling wine was the chosen draft for King Ferdinand I and Queen Mary’s 1922 coronation, as well as for wayfarers travelling on the Orient Express between Paris and Constantinople in the early 20th century.The outstanding qualities of Rhein Extra sparkling wine have been recognized even since its beginning, being appreciated also nowadays in the most prestigious international competitions. Here we will enjoy a delicious traditional 3-course lunch, winetasting and visit of the oldest Romanian wine cellar which uses the traditional Champenoise method of producing sparkling wines, and we will learn how Romania's most famous sparkling wine is produced, bottled, corked and labeled. Since April 2006, the Rhein Wine Cellar has been appointed "Supplier of His Majesty King Michael I of Romania". Here, you will also be able to buy genuine Romanian wines and sparkling wines from the gift shop, if you wish.
- Crama Apogeum – the complex consisting of the winery, mansion and the old cellar once constituted a royal property. Prince Nicolae, the fourth child of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria, lived here a beautiful love story with Ioana Doletti Dumitrescu, the daughter of a landowner from the region. The two married in 1931, violating the statute of the Royal House. The original civil registry page is kept here, proof of their eternal love.
