A building with a troubled history, made to rise as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the country and perhaps even in the world, Cărtureşti Carusel ("Carousel of Light"), manages to become famous through its greatness, beauty, innovation and diversity.
From the outside, it doesn’t look like much but once you enter the building, you can’t help but gasp in delight and smile, as you take in the wonder that is Cărturești Carusel.
The store’s six floors spread across more than 10,000 square feet that hold as many books. There are elegantly curved balconies on each of the upper levels, a large open space in the middle, and a teahouse on the top floor that offers a great view of the entire bookstore.
Cărturești Carusel is an experiment of cultural habitation of the old center, offering a space for reading, socializing and artistic exploration of the heart of the city. With a bistro on the top floor, a multimedia space in the basement and a gallery dedicated to contemporary art on the first floor, the bookstore is preparing to tell a new story on a street with a vibrant commercial tradition.
Most of the books are in Romanian, but there is also a small English language selection.
The bookstore located in the city center, in the Old Town, it’s opened Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Thursday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight. To avoid the crowds, it's best to visit in the morning hours.
