The Herd Of Horses

Even though the Sâmbăta de Jos herd of horses's primary focus is on breeding, rearing, improving genetic material, and training the exceptional Lipițan race of horses, it also welcomes tourists who want to see these devoted animals.

Romsilva is the owner of the Sâmbăta de Jos herd of horses, which is a government institution. There are a few of these herd in Romania, but the one in Sâmbăta de Jos, which is also the biggest in the nation, is the only one that breeds white Lipițan horses. The horses from this herd compete in events and have won numerous national and international championships, but their primary aim is to preserve the breed and serve as a genetic source. The buyers who come here are not only from Romania.

During the reign of Emperor Leopold II, the herd was founded in 1874, mostly for military purposes. 'Reserved' horses were exclusive to the nobility. The horses were moved to Hungary before the start of World War One. The herd was reestablished by the Romanian government in 1920 with the help of 3 coursers and 22 females, and it has been prospering ever since, growing to an amazing herd of approximately 1000 animals by the year 1970. The herd can support itself by giving the horses food in carefully monitored, high-quality conditions.

The Sâmbăta de Jos herd offers: breeding stallions for public stud farms; expert advice on breeding horses for the purpose of improvement of breeds in the private sector; riding courses; dressage and training; equestrian shows and competitions; equestrian leisure and tourism.

The Lipițan breed ( The Lipizzan or Lipizzaner)

One of the most precious horse breeds in the world, Lipitan horses, are raised at the Sambata de Jos in Țara Făgărașului.

The Sâmbăta de Jos herd in Brasov County celebrates the "Tradition of Lipizzaner Horse Breeding in Romania" being included to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

One of the most significant Lipizzaner herds in the world, Sâmbăta de Jos, is home to seven bloodlines that bear the names of the stallions who helped create the current herd: Conversano, Favory, Maestoso, Neapolitano, Pluto, Siglavy-Capriola, and Tulipan. A Lipizzaner horse has a balanced and refined shape. It is a vivacious horse that is docile, obedient, and harmless. The Lipizzaner is the predominant breed adopted in the world's top academic dressage schools due to its elegance and temperament.

They reach 1.50 metres tall and weigh 400 to 500 kilogrammes on normal. Their eyes are big and expressive, and their fur tends to be white or light grey. Due to their exceptional physical strength and fitness, Lipitan horses are perfect for riding, dancing, and other sports.

For more than 450 years, Lipizzan horse breeding has fostered community unity and a strong feeling of shared identity, in part due to its specialised language and the deep emotional bond between breeders and their horses.

After visiting the Sâmbăta de Jos herd of horses, even if you do not love horses now, you will. From this peaceful and beautiful location in the middle of nature, you will return energised and with your heart galloping with joy.
