We start the day early morning, pick up from your hotel in Bucharest.
We will drive first to Targoviste - the former capital of Wallachia, where we visit the Princely Court. With a history that goes back to the 15th century, this former Princely Court was used as a residence by some of the most famous princes of Wallachia, including Constantin Brancoveanu and the legendary Vlad the Impaler (Dracula) who built the emblematic Chindia Tower, one of the elements of the defensive military system.
We will head then to Curtea de Arges, another former capital, older than Targoviste. The monastery with the same name is an important sight to be viewed. Built in the 16th century, with marble and tiles brought in from Constantinople, the current edifice dates from 1875, when French architect André Lecomte du Nouy was retained to save the complex, which was in near ruins. It represents an important royal mausoleum, as well – the members of the Royal Family of Romania (Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen), the founder (St. Neagoe Basarab), being buried here.
We continue our drive uphill the mountains. Poienari Fortress will be our next stop; the real refuge citadel built by Dracula is guarding the river valley from an impressive overlooking hilltop. We have to climb 1470 steps to get there (around 20-30 minutes on a trek). Once we reach the fortress, we will find the cliffside view mind-blowing, as the scenery up there is really beautiful!
Our last stop before getting back to Bucharest will be at Vidraru Arch Dam, located on the bank of the Argeş River, next to the famous Transfagarasan Road, a real engineering jewel! Built in 1966 to create hydroelectricity, it was the fifth largest dam in Europe at that time. The Carpathian Mountains reveal their peaks at the end of the scenery, from the dam. So, prepare again your cameras for some great photos!
Return back to Bucharest during the evening, end of the tour.
