Bucovina - Famous Painted Monasteries Tour

Enjoy a fascinating tour, focused on the culture and spirituality of Bukovina, that will give you the opportunity to discover the unique Painted Monasteries architectural treasures, meet local artisans, enjoy one of the most panoramic landscapes in Romania and try local mouth-watering gastronomy!

Arrival in Suceava in the afternoon/evening, where you will meet your guide.

If you travel to Suceava by train (1st class sleeping berth), our local guide will pick you up from the Railway Station. If you travel by plane, our local guide will pick you up from the Airport. Then, transfer by car to the 4* hotel/pension in Bukovina region (Gura Humorului, Vama village or similar). Dinner and overnight.

Breakfast in the morning. After that, we will discover together the famous Moldavian Painted Monasteries of Humor, Voronet - widely known as "the Sistine Chapel of the East", Moldovita and Sucevita, passing through picturesque villages.

The Painted Monasteries of Bukovina, placed on UNESCO'S World Heritage list, are among the most beautiful treasures of Romania. Their painted exterior walls are decorated with elaborate 15th and 16th century frescoes featuring portraits of saints and prophets, scenes from the life of Jesus, images of angels and demons, and heaven and hell. Deemed masterpieces of Byzantine art, these churches are one-of-a-kind architectural sites in Europe.

Today, we are also going to visit the Egg Museum in Vama village, deep in the heart of Bukovina, where we will see the most varied and numerous collection of dyed and decorated eggs in Romania, and one of the most important ones in Europe at once. We will be able to discover the local traditions of the area and the art of decorating the Easter eggs.

In the evening, return to our hotel/pension, overnight.

Along our day, there will be stops for lunch (optional), while dinner will be included at the hotel/pension's restaurant, traditional local meal.

Breakfast in the morning.

Check-out around 09-10:00am and leave the hotel/pension to discover the surroundings in our last day in Bukovina.

We will begin our today's visits with Putna Monastery - first and one of the most important monastic center in Moldavia, built between 1466 and 1481 by Stephen the Great, following his victory over the Turks at Chilia.

Next stop will be at the Marginea Black Pottery workshop, in Marginea village. The black pottery produced here is known internationally, mainly due to its black color obtained following an ancient burning technique. Marginea became a pottery center somewhere in the 16th century, when the ceramics was mainly crafted for food storage or other purposes. Still preserved to this day, this beautiful old craft offers tourists all around the world the opportunity to witness the art of making black ceramic items and bring truly unique souvenirs back home.

After that, if time permits us (depending on your departure schedule), we can also visit Patrauti Church (built by Stephan the Great in 1487, being the smallest of all his churches and monasteries and the only one destined to be a nun monastery, a "sanctuary for soldiers injured in wars"), Dragomirna Monastery (the tallest monastery in Bukovina, built on a breathtakingly monumental scale), ending with the Princely Fortress of Suceava; the fortress was built at the end of the 14th century, near Suceava medieval city, being the main residence of Moldavia's rulers for almost 200 years.

Along our day, there will be stops for lunch (optional). In the evening, dinner, then we say Goodbye!
